2008 Writing Contests

Don’t think that these contests are only for eggheads. A kid who does not like writing will get excited really quickly when he knows he could get $5,000!  And the chances of winning these contests are much better then playing the lottery or entering sweepstakes because there are far fewer competing for the prize. Winning or placing in these contests also looks great on a college application.  Maybe you could offer an incentive for your child to enter or do what I did. I gave this list to Daniel’s teachers. I am hoping that one of them will use a contest as an assignment.

The Dream Quest One Poetry & Writing Contest is open to anyone who loves to arrange words into the beautiful litreary art of poetry or write a short story that is worth telling everyone! And to all who have the ability to dream... Write a poem or short story for a chance to win cash prizes. All works must be original. http://www.dreamquestone.com

 

Guidelines:

Write a poem, thirty lines or fewer on any subject, style, or form, typed or neatly hand printed.

And/or write a short story, five pages maximum length, on any subject or theme, creative writing fiction or non-fiction (including essay compositions, diary, journal entries and screenwriting). Also, must be typed or neatly hand printed.

Multiple poetry and short story entries are accepted.

Deadline: December 31, 2008

All winners will be announced on January 31, 2009

Prizes:

Writing Contest First Prize is $500. Second Prize: $250. Third Prize: $100.

Poetry Contest First Prize is $250. Second Prize: $125. Third Prize: $50.

Entry fees:

Writing Contest entry fee: $10 per short story submitted.

Poetry Contest entry fee: $5 per poem.

To send entries: Include title(s) with your story (ies) or poem(s), along with your name, address, phone#, email, brief biographical info. (Tell us a little about yourself), on the coversheet. Middle School/Junior High (6th-8th grades)
Elementary (through 5th grade)

Entry Deadline: Must be post marked by Friday, February 20, 2009

GUIDELINES

WHO CAN ENTER:

• Writer must be under the age of 19 on February 20, 2009.

• Writers must be a current Virginia (counties: Frederick, Clarke, Warren, Page, Shenandoah, Rockingham, Loudoun County, Fauquier County and Winchester) or West Virginia (counties of: Jefferson, Berkeley, Morgan, Hampshire or Hardy) resident, attending Public, Private school, or in a Home School program in listed counties.

WHAT MAY BE ENTERED:

• The choice and style is up to you.

• Scripts should be ONE ACT in length and no longer than 20 minutes.

• Scripts must be original. No musicals, and screenplays are not eligible, nor adaptations of other authors work.

• Scripts must be submitted by the author/s.

• Collaborations are acceptable with a limit of 3 writers (all writers must be under the age of 19).

• Submit 3 copies of your play. Keep the original at home because scripts will not be returned.

High School Contest Winners will receive:

  • The T. Carter Fussell Award in Playwrighting
  • • First Place will receive a $75.00 Savings Bond and Staged-Reading Presentation and two tickets to a play during the upcoming Season.

    • Second Place will receive a $50.00 Savings Bond and two tickets to a play during the upcoming Season.

    First Place winning play will be produced by Wayside Theatre and performed in a Readers Theatre, a staged-reading presentation, in the spring for a weekend. The First Place student playwright works with a dramaturg to refine his or her script for performance and remains an active participant in the rehearsal process.
